Getting up close and personal with giraffe, elephants, buffalo, wildebeest, lion and zebra is all in a day’s work for Tristan Voorspuy from Offbeat Safaris, and he believes that experiencing the nature of Kenya is best done without the trappings of the modern world, which is why he’s been running luxury horseback safaris for the last 30 years.
Horses and humans come together in a spectacular landscape, where reliable, trusting, well trained horses allow intrepid travelers to experience a far greater level of immersion, than would be otherwise possible. Horses are well suited to the job, as they are able to access areas that vehicles would struggle to reach. But more importantly, the wild animals just seem to be more accepting of humans if they arrive on horseback, blending effortlessly into nature and becoming part of the back drop, in a way that vehicles loaded with people simply cannot do. Sitting on a horse, which grazing a mere 30ft from a colossal male lion lolling in the afternoon sun; seeing it blink and hearing it yawn, is a life enhancing, life changing experience for visitors. Thankfully, serving up jaw-dropping adventure it is all in a day’s work for the team at Offbeat Safaris.
Tristan Voorspuy and his friendly staff are pioneers of horseback safaris, and what they don’t know about the subject just isn’t worth knowing! Their mobile tented safaris are supported by vehicles, grooms, cooks, guides and camp support staff who provide luxurious comfort for those travelers staying in their remote camp sites. The camps are open to the surrounding area, allowing the wildlife to venture in and out of the camps unhindered. This gives guests the opportunity to ride, or walk, out of the camp, which allows far greater scope for experiencing nature, and being part of nature. It also provides a fantastic opportunity for night-time safaris, where a very different side of life the animals reveals itself after the sun sets. The safari boasts four prime locations, stretching over 200km, and guests are able to saddle up for around six to eight hours a day, with the camps sleeping a maximum of 14 people each.
