Defending champions, Zedan Polo came back from an opening round loss to put together a narrow victory over Dubai side, Bin Drai in the HH President of the UAE Polo Cup held at Ghantoot Racing & Polo Club until April 5.
Saudi Arabian side, Zedan headed by team patron, Amr Zedan found their stride in the prestigious tournament thanks to the high-scoring antics of their nine-goal Argentine Open star, Nachi Heguy who scored six times.
Mariano Uranga and Billy Healy scored once each to make up the rest of Zedan’s goals.
For Bin Drai, JJ Brane scored four times while Emirati patron, Rashid Bin Drai got three.
In their opening match of the tournament, Zedan had been beaten by hosts Ghantoot in a 7-5 clash, but the side’s patron said his team had now hit on a winning formula.
“That was exactly what we were hoping for,” said Zedan after the match. “We have been working towards this tournament all season as we want to defend our title. It’s a long road and every team in this competition has a chance of winning, but this has been our focus for a while.
“We played well today and I hope that we can continue like this throughout the rest of the tournament. We have one of the best players in the world in Nachi, but every member of our team plays an important role on the field.
“Next we will meet Abu Dhabi who are a good side, but we are confident that of we play our own polo, we can progress further in this tournament with our goal being to reach the final on April 5.”
In the second match of the day, hosts Ghantoot lost to Abu Dhabi 9-8.
Zedan are next in action on Sunday when they face Abu Dhabi Polo.
